Loose tooth?

So more than about a month ago I was suspose to get a root canal, but because I couldn't find a way to pay for it, it never happened (they are sooooooo expensive, way, way more than most dental proceedures it seems like). Anyway, now one of my teeth on that side of my mouth is loose. What could be going on?

Loose tooth?
Root canals are necessary when the decay (cavity) reaches the pulp of the tooth. This is where the nerve is, and once infected, there are only 2 treatment options... a root canal or extraction. I don't recommend pulling the tooth, because that leads to other problems down the road. It is always best to save the teeth, if possible.

Your tooth can be loose because of the infection building up at the apex (root) of the tooth. This infection can cause the tooth to lift ever so slightly from the socket. Also, if infection goes untreated, it can essentially break down the bone around this tooth and neighboring teeth as well, causing mobility.

If there is any way possible, please get the root canal done. I know it's costly, but will be well worth it.

Root canals are a pretty simple procedure. You will be numb, so you shouldn't feel anything during the process. A small access hole will be drilled in the top of the tooth allowing the dentist to see the canals. Then small metal files will be inserted into the root of the tooth so the nerve tissue can be removed from inside the root. The roots of the tooth will stay intact. At no time is the root of the tooth completely drilled out like another person mentioned!! A root canal only removes the nerve tissue, and can be completed in 1 or 2 visits. Also, your dentist can put you on antibiotics first to help with the infection, and can also preform what's called a pulpotomy. This is where the access hole is drilled into the top of the tooth, and just the top cluster if nerve tissue is removed, but not down inside of each root. This is a temporary fix, and a root canal will still need to be done, but this will buy you some time to save for the root canal, and it will help alleviate pain... but only for a short time.

I hope this info helps, and if there is anything else I can do for you, please don't hesitate to ask.

Good luck!!
Reply:We get root canals because decay invade the root of the tooth and essentially kills the tooth. The root is completely drilled out, and the canal is filled with "gutta percha." If you needed this done, and you didn't get it done, the decay in the tooth could be causing inflammation in the surrounding area that could result in your tooth becoming lose. It could also be an indication of bone loss in the area resulting from the infected tooth that causes other teeth to become loose. If the tooth is only very mildly loose, like you felt it move once or twice, but it isn't REALLY lose, then it could just be natural flexibility combined with your heightened sense of awareness to the area that's making you freak out. Root canals are serious business though, put it on a credit card if you have to. Letting stuff like that go leads to a longer list of other problems and higher bills.
Reply:You might be having an infection, go to your dentist and check it up again because you can loose your tooth, and it will be more expensive and a larger risk to wait.
