My five year old has a loose tooth (bottom central incisor) and everything I have read says they don't start loosing baby teeth until 6-8 years old. Can losing this tooth at such an early age cause problems later on? Is this too young for a natural loose tooth.
Is age 5 too early for a loose tooth?
I have worked in pediatric dentistry for over 30 years. You are right that the "average" age that the lower central incisor is shed is around age 6. This is the average. That means some children lose them at 4 and some not till 8 years old. I have seen children have all their permanent teeth erupted by age 9 and some not have them all by 15 years old.
It is perfectly normal. The only problem you may have that the teeth are erupting early is that your child may not have the physical growth yet in the jaw to accommodate the teeth. Teeth erupt full size, but the jaw is still growing. Eventually, everything will catch up with each other.
Reply:I don't think it's too early. If you're really worried take the kid to a dentist
Reply:No, it's not too young. 5 is a TINY bit earlier than usual but there's nothing wrong with it. It won't cause any problems later on.
Reply:No, my daughter lost her first tooth on her 5th birthday. She may just begin earlier than most like my daughter. She's already lost about 5 or so teeth and she's 7.
Reply:No problem, I have seen many loose at 4years. Let nature run its course and everything will be fine. Unless there was trauma that is causing this looseness, the time must be right. Good Luck
Reply:Age five is the perfect time to start losing baby teeth. What you read gave you the usual range, but it is normal to start losing baby teeth a little early. She will lose the bottom front two teeth first, then the bottom teeth that were beside the front two, which are called the lateral incisors. The next to go are usually the upper front four teeth. After that she probably will not lose anymore until she is around nine or ten. And, no, starting to lose teeth at age five should not cause any problems down the road. However, you do need to keep your eye out for the first permanent molars to start coming in. Many parents do not realize these teeth are erupting because their child has not lost any back teeth yet. These teeth come in behind the child's very back baby molars, so try to pay attention to that and get her in to see a dentist so that they can put a protective coating, or sealant, on these teeth to prevent them from getting cavities.
Reply:No it is not too young for a loose tooth. My sister and I lost our first tooth when we werre five. No it wont cause problems later on. Every kid I know lost his/her first tooth when they were four or five.
Reply:No, 5 is not too early to loose a tooth. As many others have said, 6-8 is just the average. I remember loosing my first tooth at about 4-4.5, right before entering kindergarten (I went to my first day of school missing teeth :-D). Once I started loosing my teeth, they all came out in a relatively short amount of time, and I had all my adult teeth (except for my wisdom teeth) in by age 8. My brother was the exact same way.
Now, at age 22, I have all my adult teeth (I got my wisdom teeth in at 16) and never had any problems. No braces, no cavities, nothing pulled :-)
